When doing a major kitchen remodel and you are choosing new lighting, check out pendants lights for over your kitchen island and or breakfast bar area. These small lights hang down two to three feet from the ceiling and are supported by metal rods, small chains, or string like material. You can think of them as miniature chandeliers that have focused lighting on a particular area or item. This type of lighting is nothing new really, as the earliest version of a pendant light was something like a ceramic pot that held a flame and was suspended from the fielding by rope or woven twine.
Pendant lighting has to be carefully planned when including it in a decorating theme, due to the fact that if they are installed to low, they block the view into another room, or get in the way of daily routines carried out in the house. In conjunction with a dimmer switch, they make wonderful nightlights that look like glowing orbs suspended in mid air when the rooms are at their darkest. You may have to ask for help from friends and family when sizing up how far down the pendant should hang. They can hold them up to the ceiling while you estimate the length needed for that install location.
Pending Lights Look Great
Lighting pendants also look great over a foyer and mini-pendants can be use where space in constrained and the furniture arrangement will not allow for any conventional lighting situations. They come in all colors and materials so you can find just the right combination for any setting in your home. The installation is much easier than normal lighting due to the lack of weight. In other words, they do not need to be near a stud in the ceiling for a successful installation. If you are using say an array 12 in a row then a support stud may have to be installed in the attic to help with the weight suspension, other wise with three or four you will be fine.
Pricing like all fixtures is scalable for any budget starting at the low end for around fourteen dollars each to over twelve hundred dollars for what would appear to be almost like illuminated fine jewelry. After you have made your selection of which lighting pendant, and know exactly what model and manufacturer, then start shopping the online auctions and clearance websites. You may be able to get them for half the cost you originally thought you would be spending.
